Is it COVID-19 safe?
Exodus 2021 is a self-guided audio tour. Grab your phone, headphones, and a mask and take the tour while observing social distancing guidelines.

What do I need?
A smartphone you can stream content from and headphones. A mask, some water, some sunscreen and a snack might be a good idea too.

Is this a tour of Highland Park?
No, not as such. This a walk inspired by the events of the Exodus. It takes place in Highland Park and makes its way through some of our favorite streets of the neighborhood, but it’s not specifically a tour of the area.

How long does it take?
The tour is estimated to take 1.5 - 2 hours, roundtrip.

How much walking is it?
The tour is about 2 miles one way. Round trip, it is about 3 miles long.

Does it start and end at the same place? Where does it start and end?
The tour is one way. The tour starts at Temple Beth Israel of Highland Park and Eagle Rock (TBI) and ends at Hermon Park. It is about a mile walk back from Hermon Park to TBI.

Can I take this tour if I’m not Jewish/don’t know much about Passover?
Yes! Consider this a dive into the Passover story. The central narrative retells the Exodus story from a contemporary point of view.

Are there bathroom stops on the tour?
There are public bathrooms at the end of the tour, in Hermon Park. The core of the tour takes place along the Figueroa corridor, where there are lots of coffeeshops and food establishments. Support a local merchant, buy a snack, and use a restroom. Please note, we’ve heard reports that some stores have closed their restrooms because of Covid.

Can I do it in chunks?
Yes! If it makes sense time or energy wise, take the tour in chunks. We would still encourage you to do it in order to follow the story.

Can I do it from my house?
If taking the walk is impossible or simply unappealing, listen to the tour from home. The audio content is fantastic — and doesn’t depend on the location to make sense. (Though we do feel that taking the walk enhances it.)

Is there parking?
There’s street parking along Monte Vista St. There are several public, pay lots in Highland Park, a short walk away from the start at TBI.

TBI is a short walk away from the Highland Park Metro Stop; taking Metro is also a great option.

Is this tour accessible?
The walk takes place on Los Angeles sidewalk street which are infamously in bad condition. That said, it is mostly accessible with the exception of two stops, which can easily be skipped. (One involves a slight detour to go up a steep street; the other is at the very end and involves descending a set of stairs into the Arroyo Seco.)

Is it child-friendly?
There’s nothing in the tour that would be upsetting or inappropriate for children. That said... there’s nothing that’s geared towards them either. We would not recommend taking them along, but YMMV.

Is this tour dog friendly?
Yes! The tour takes place on public streets. Along Figueroa Street, many merchants offer water for dogs. The tour concludes at Hermon Park, where there is a dog park.
